James is originally from Gray, Maine where he first learned photography and videography in high school while directing a local access TV show. He went on to serve the local film industry as a production designer, set decorator, grip, and still photographer. Always interested in fine art James spent two years at Maine College of Art before deciding to study photography specifically. He transferred and finished a degree at Rochester Institute of Technology choosing the school for its reputation in photographic illustration.
From college James went to New York City with wife Beth, a violin teacher. He was fortunate enough to have an introduction awaiting him in New York to Mary Ellen Mark, a historical figure in the area of portraiture. In years to follow he met and worked for many other professionals while continuing to shoot his own projects. Among those distinguished photographers; Albert Watson, Henry Leutwyler, Robert Tardio, Mark Viker, & Andrew Brusso.
Still living in NYC James has photographed many faces, places, & objects both in the studio and on location for several clients and publications.
